Hollis points out that there were close connections between the Bryn Mawr Summer School and the Vassar English Department. This connection came through Wylie’s work g buc k ’s “s o c i a l” v i e w of e t h ic s a n d r h e t or ic as an instructor at the school. In addition, Helen Lockwood, a student of Buck and Wylie, taught at the school and shaped its curriculum in significant ways. In fact, Rita Rubinstein Heller places Lockwood among those teachers who had the “greatest impact” on the school during its first period (1921–1927).

The best way to communicate ideas to others is to study one’s own process of perception to create the same concept in the minds of others. This belief in universal thought processes was central to much of Buck’s ™¤ buc k ’s “s o c i a l” v i e w of e t h ic s a n d r h e t or ic work in rhetoric and pedagogy. Although this emphasis on universal thought processes was also the premise of rhetorics based on faculty and associational psychologies, the difference was the way the new functionalist psychology defined these processes.

Current-traditional rhetoric emphasizes the formal aspects of writing over content, which “meant that students received little instruction in invention, wrote in the modes of discourse . . 9 In contrast, Buck drew on insights from functionalist psychology, which meant studying the mind or consciousness as a part of nature, focusing on how it helped the human organism live in its environment.
