Polaroid photos are very valuable, especially for immediate consultations with surgical staff and for inclusion with a biopsy specimen for the pathologist. On the other hand, the resolution of detail is of course greatly reduced compared with that of a slide (Figs. 76 and 77). The production of slides is particularly important for teaching purposes as well as for the illustration of publications and diagnostic consultations. Both Agfa CT 20 and Kodachrome 64 have been found to be good film materials for the purpose.

The posterior third of the tongue must be photographed within the oral cavity and for this purpose ring-flash attachments are the most simple to use. When it comes to depicting malignant tumours it is important to include as much of the floor of the mouth as possible from a lateral point of view as well as the normal anterior view. Due to restricted movement of the tongue because of pain and tumour infiltration it is sometimes necessary to move the tongue to the side with help of a transparent spatula.
